Blogging

I have enjoyed my journey of the 23 things. Some of them I'd done before, others I hadn't. I really enjoyed how twitter brings your friends closer to you no matter the actual distance. I'd never had a blog before, so blogging 23 times was a new thing. I've struggled with posting YouTube videos and getting Shelfari to show up. (I know Shelfari wasn't one of the 23 things, but everyone else had one!) I've helped others create their blogs and work with their avatar and play with Flickr. The overall experience for me has been good. I'm also very glad I have a desk job and a dedicated computer. I know some struggle with finding time and a place to learn and play. Thanks CML for bringing this our way!

MOLDI

Every so often I find a problem with not reading what everyone else is reading. I didn't really find any books I wanted to download on MOLDI. I did however see a few CDs I wouldn't mind downloading. I have in the past looked through the eFlicks and audiobooks and I'm quite familiar with how it all works. I'm glad all this site involved was saying my library is CML and using my library card number. I do have a lot of sign in names and passwords that I've aquired over the last couple of months.

Podcasts

So this is one of the 23 things I've never done before. Podcats - I've heard about them and other people like them, so today I set out to figure them out. I had iTunes already downloaded on my computer, so this is where I went. Unfortunately, I did not find this very user friendly. I thought maybe I had to sign up, but then it wanted my credit card info, so I quit halfway through. I ended up remembering that my morning radio show had a podcast, so I went to that site, found where it mentioned the podcast and it pulled up my iTunes page and let me subscribe. I'm sure there has to be an easier way to find things, so I will continue to explore it. I now have a subscription to two free podcasts, yay!

I recently received a video clip from my friend Sarah Mackey using the site, Vimeo. I'd never heard of it before, but it looks like it could be of use. Today, I decided to look around to see what else exists besides YouTube. I found a great page called Top Ten Video Sharing Websites.
I didn't know google had one, I usually know everything google has. So if you're interested, check it out.

Toolbox

I was looking through CML's toolbox today and discovered there are many things in it that I've already done or have an account for. A new one is called stumbleupon. I've never even heard of it. Today I am a new member. It looks like it will be a great tool to find new sites that go along with my interest. So here's to another account!

Web 2.0 Award List

On the award list is one of my new favorite sites: Pandora.com. Gerald Schwab shared this site with me and I love it! I told my husband about it and now I'm constantly listening to it at home instead of the radio. On this site, you can tell them a particular band or song that you like, then it picks similar bands/songs. Also, if you don't like the song playing, just give it a thumbs down and it goes to the next song. Pandora was only rated 2nd in the music list, so I guess I need to go check out the #1 pick.

Google Docs

I've been using google docs for a little while now. I know I've previously mentioned my iGoogle page, so I love Google products. Since college I've used email as a place to store my documents. It works for me. No matter where I am, if there is internet access, I can pull up what I'm working on. Google docs has made that even easier. I can upload something I did in Word or Excel and then share it with whoever I want or keep it to myself.

Wiki Sandbox

So I did like everyone else and didn't ask for permission to edit, although I thought I did. Now I finally have permission and I get lots and lots of emails! Every time someone makes an edit, I get an email. So now I have a new folder in my GroupWise and a new rule to send all the emails over to the folder automatically. I haven't made any edits though because I want to keep my identity a secret and when you make an edit, it tells you the email address of the person who did it, and since I used my library email address, of course everyone can tell who you are! But all in all I like this wiki and I think it is a great tool.

Learn About Wikis

I've watched the little video on the learn & play site about wikis. I can see how they are the new thing. As someone who gets a lot of email, I could see them being more useful. What I want to find or start is a wiki calendar, that my family could go into.

Library 2.0

I read through all the articles suggested on the Learn & Play blog. I enjoyed reading Michael Stephens opinion in Into a new world of librarianship. He mentioned some things that make a library a Library 2.0 library: Librarians 2.0 plans for their users, embraces Web 2.0 tools, controls technolust, makes good, yet fast decisions, is a trendspotter, and gets content. I think CML could embrace Web 2.0 tools better, but we are working on it, so that's what counts.

Library Thing

I opened a Library Thing account awhile ago because someone invited me. But I've been not so great about keeping it up. When I checked last week, I had 4 books listed that I've read. Just so I didn't look stupid I quickly put in a list of titles I've read and some that I want to read. But as you see I also have shelfari. They are really similar, but oh well, now I have 2 more sites to keep up with.

Wow, I've been working on the ALA poster to get a picture to fit correctly. This is definitely not the easiest thing to do. It's like you have to have a pic with a lot of blank space at the top because the READ part of the poster will cover the top of the pic, no matter how small you make it. I put my cousin Liam's pic in the poster. He loves to be read to.

Finding Feeds

FYI... In case your following the 23 things and you look at my blog and think that I'm not going in order, it's because I'm not! I just now realized that every time I was to discover something, I was supposed to blog about each thing individually. I was just putting the url, for the site I discovered, but if you're doing that too, it's wrong!

So one of the feeds I've like the most on my bloglines is the CML feed that tells me when we link a new book on CD to our catalog. It's been very interesting and I've found and received one of my reserves already. I have some other feeds, but not quite so interesting as of yet. I also put a feed for bloglines on my iGoogle page, so it tells me how many things I'm missing out on.

Flickr Mashups

So I've been playing with Flickr today. I've been downloading pics for our offices flickr account and also helping out a coworker, so while I was there, I was playing around figuring stuff out. I've looked at a couple different of the mashups. I signed up for mappr, played with the flickr color pickr and montagr. I had a lot of fun with the flickr color pickr, but I couldn't figure out how to get them on my blog, I guess I'll save that for another day. I did figure out how to load a pic from flickr to your blog, it's so easy once you figure it out, it makes me mad it took me as long as it did to do it.

Twitter

I just realized I was supposed to blog about twittering! I first heard of it on my morning radio show on 88.7 Radio U. The whole station used Twitter to give updates on what they were doing, or going for lunch, etc. That morning I went to twitter.com and watched the demo video. Of course, being the observer that I am, I learned all about it and didn't sign up. Later after Michael Stevens came, I signed up for twitter. I have a few followers and I'm following a few people, but I'm not very good about posting things. If you haven't yet, follow the Learn & Play twitter. Whoever is behind it always gives great info and during the storm was constantly updating it.

del.icio.us

I've had a del.icio.us account since Helene Blower's came to talk to CML before she worked for us. Soon after her talk, I opened an account and exported my work favorites over to my new account. A month or so later, I lost all my CML favorites, but since I had exported them over to del.icio.us, I wasn't out of luck. It took the library a couple weeks to get my favorites back up and working and I would have been really upset if it wouldn't have been for del.icio.us. I've found it a great place to find interesting sites. I have a link on my iGoogle page (my iGoogle has been fixed, so I'm not mad at them anymore) that shows the top 3 tagged sites of the day.

Bloglines

I'm falling behind slightly with Learn & Play, ahh!! But today I went to bloglines and registered. This is a fun site. I'm currently very mad at iGoogle, so maybe bloglines can take over from here. (Just in case you're wondering, iGoogle upgraded to a "new iGoogle" well just taking a look at the blogs about it, no one seems happy. My page is totally screwed up!)

Back to bloglines, I could spend a great bit of time on this site, finding feeds. I did some searching and linked the Learn & Play page and the CML homepage.

I don't know about anyone else, but I love my iGoogle page. I have links to my different email accounts, newspapers, traffic, weather, Google booksmarks, Google Talk, and many more. Also, as I'm going through the 23 new things, I'm setting up new RSS feeds and linking them on my iGoogle page. Yesterday I discovered a gadget that put 6 pics from my Flickr account on my page, a quick sign into MySpace, and a Library Thing link.

Interesting Report on the Working Poor

Yesterday I remembered an article that I'd read in the Dispatch that was talking about how much a person needs to make an hour to not need government assistance. I found the article through the Columbus Dispatch archives (columbuslibrary.org > Reference > Premium Resources) titled "Self-sufficiency proves a stretch - New Ohio report finds costs of basic needs much higher than federal poverty levels" from July 31, 2008. So I wrote an email to Ohio Association of Community Action Agencies, and the executive director, Philip Cole emailed me the link to the report: www.oacaatraining.org

Learning Goals

Yesterday, I began a blog and opened a MySpace account. I also thought of all the other technology I hadn't been following and the list of 23 new things to learn, grew in my head to many, many more. My goals are to learn as many as possible and come up with ways to keep things up to date. How does one keep track of two personal email accounts, myspace, facebook, flickr, etc?
